The latest Covid-19 figures as on Sunday morning show a spike of 19,906 fresh coronavirus cases and 410 deaths in the last 24 hours in the country. The death toll now stands at 16,095, while the total of over 5 lakh cases includes 2,03,051 active cases and 3,09,713 cured/discharged/migrated cases.

This is the fifth consecutive day that coronavirus infections have increased by more than 15,000.

Of the 410 new deaths reported till Sunday morning, 167 were in Maharashtra, 68 in Tamil Nadu, 66 in Delhi, 19 in Uttar Pradesh, 18 in Gujarat, 13 in West Bengal, 11 each in Rajasthan and Karnataka, nine in Andhra Pradesh, seven in Haryana, six each in Punjab and Telangana, four in Madhya Pradesh, two in Jammu and Kashmir and one each in Bihar, Odisha and Puducherry.

On Saturday, coronavirus cases in Maharashtra rose to 1,59,133 with a record 5,318 new patients, while the death toll due to the pandemic reached 7,273 with 167 fatalities coming to light, an official said. Mumbai accounted for 1,402 new infection cases on the same day, Pune city for 429 cases and Aurangabad city for 137 cases.

Meanwhile, Gujarat reported its highest single-day spike of 615 new Covid-19 cases, taking the overall count to 30,773, the state health department had said on Saturday. With the death of 18 patients in the day, the number of fatalities has gone up to 1,790.

In Assam, the number of coronavirus cases crossed the 7,000-mark on Saturday after 246 more people, including 31 police personnel, tested positive, while the death toll due to the disease rose to 10, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said.

India’s coronavirus tally crossed the 5 lakh-mark in just 39 days. Medical experts have pointed to the ramped-up Covid-19 testing, now available more extensively and at a reasonable price, as a big reason for the spike in cases recently.

In some good news, the health ministry had reported that the total number of recoveries outnumbered the active coronavirus cases, with the difference between the two nearing one lakh fast. The recovered cases exceeded the active cases by 98,493 as on Saturday. The number of active cases stood at 1,97,387, while 2,95,880 patients have recovered, the ministry said, adding, “With this encouraging status, the recovery rate is touching 58.13 per cent amongst Covid-19 patients.”
